Watch: Eagles’ Wentz owes game check to kicker Elliott after field goal

Sept. 27 (UPI) — Quarterback Carson Wentz bet his game check on Jake Elliott making his game-winning field goal.

Elliott drilled the 61-yarder Sunday.

“This guy’s a superhero if he makes this. I’ll freaking give him my paycheck. I’ll give him my game check,” Wentz could be heard saying on the sidelines during the sequence. The Philadelphia Eagles were tied with the New York Giants 24-24 with just 1 second remaining on the clock before the kick.

“Come one Elliott. Come on big 4,” Wentz said on the sideline before the kick, as he joked with linebacker Kamu Grugier-Hill.

Elliott boomed the kick just inside the right upright for the Eagles’ victory.

The team’s quarterback went crazy, screaming and running on the sideline after the successful attempt.

“You son of a gun,” Wentz shouted.

Wentz makes about $32,000 each game, while Elliott is due $465,000 this season.

“Well that escalated quickly…but don’t worry, @jake_elliott22 and I got this worked out…,” Wentz tweeted Wednesday morning.

Elliott, 22, was originally drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals in the fifth round of the 2017 NFL Draft. He has made all of his extra point attempts and is now 4-of-6 on field goal attempts.

“Just watching him these last couple of weeks, how he’s prepared himself in practice and how he’s kicked in practice, he’s put himself in that position,” Eagles coach Doug Pederson told reporters Monday. “I looked at him in the eyes and asked him if he can nail it, and he without a blink, he said, ‘I’ve got it’, and I just felt comfortable, confident and comfortable.”

Elliott’s kick is the longest made field goal in the NFL so far this season, beating Matt Prater‘s 58-yarder. Prater also hit a field goal from 64 yards in 2013. Elliott and Greg Zuerlein (61 yards in 2015) own the longest kicks since Prater’s bomb.

“It was kind of a blur to me,” Elliott said in his postgame comments. “I don’t really know. I just know the ball was in the air for a really long time really close to that right upright.”

Elliott said it was the longest kick he has ever made in a game. He made a 56-yarder in college.
